Kneel-In Vigil: In Support and Solidarity

Date: June 4, 2020 By:

We want to express our deep sadness over the recent and violent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in the US—three of the latest victims of the systemic racism that continues to plague our society. The last week has brought into crisp focus the deep racism that remains pervasive throughout our country, a persistent and unconscionable problem in our society.

The Ragon Institute is dedicated to the study of human immunology and improvement of health and, by so doing, recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or religious beliefs. We believe in justice, equity and inclusion and stand with and support the black community and all people of color, whose outrage is justified.

Now is the time for us to unite in expressing our commitment to ending these disparities and inequalities, and to have an ongoing dialogue as to how we can accelerate the progress that is so badly needed.

Today, Friday, June 5th, we joined our colleagues at Mass General at 1 pm to hold a vigil for George Floyd and to stand in solitary with and in support of the Black community. This vigil was the first of more communal steps acknowledging the injustices of systemic and individual racism throughout our country and global community. In the coming days/weeks, we will work within the Institute, with our faculty and workforce, to understand how else we, as a community, can commit to institutional actions in making meaningful change.
